Should fans be worried about The Bachelor season 29 after how Jenn's season went?
By Ariba Bhuvad
Over the last month, there has been a lot of upheaval surrounding Jenn Tran's season of The Bachelorette. The ending was less than ideal, and the aftermath even more disastrous. With all the chaos, fans can't help but wonder, what does this mean for the next season of The Bachelor?
Before we get into that, here is a recap of the events that transpired which has fans worried about what happens next.
In case you missed it, Jenn flipped the script and proposed to Devin Strader at the end of her season. This was indeed the first time a Bachelorette had ever done this, and Bachelor Nation was in awe of Jenn's capacity to love and embark on a new journey with Devin.
Sadly, this love story quickly met its end after Devin began behaving differently and disconnected from Jenn in the days following the engagement. As Jenn explained during the "After the Final Rose" segment, Devin became a completely different man, and it wasn't long before he decided to end things with her.
Anyone who watched The Bachelorette season 21 finale was able to witness Devin's behavior in real-time, and the look of someone who doesn't care has never been more obvious. Following the premiere of the finale, things got even more interesting with Devin posting a 13-minute video with all the texts ever exchanged between him and Jenn. It had Bachelor Nation in an uproar, and rightfully so.
The drama did not stop there though, however.
According to an excerpt taken directly from Entertainment Weekly, Devin had a restraining order that was filed against him by an ex-girlfriend and he was arrested for apparently breaking into his ex's apartment. EW points out that they have copies of these orders (which Devin denied exist) which are public records.
[...] "In reality, however, Strader's ex-girlfriend did have a temporary restraining order taken out against him. Two, in fact: Strader's ex was issued a temporary restraining order against him — dated March 22, 2017, and signed by a judge of the East Baton Rouge Family Court — and an extension of that order on April 11, 2017. (Entertainment Weekly has obtained copies of both orders, which are in the public record.) He was also arrested on suspicion of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment, and ultimately pleaded guilty to charges of criminal trespass and simple criminal damage to property of less than $500, and received one year of unsupervised probation." [...]
Devin, of course, had his explanations for this, but there isn't much going on in his favor for the time being.
If all of the Devin drama wasn't enough to have fans worried about the future of Bachelor Nation, then it did certainly not help that news about a temporary restraining order against a contestant on The Golden Bachelorette surfaced recently as well. This contestant is Gil Ramirez, and as of this last week, he was still in the running for Joan Vassos' heart. According to TODAY, the order was dismissed in July, however, production did know about it before the filming for The Golden Bachelorette began. At that point, it appears, the background checks and all the vetting had been done, but is that really an excuse to keep the guy on the show anyway?
With all this chaos brewing in Bachelor Nation, what can we expect for The Bachelor Season 29?
Suffice it to say, Jenn's season does not bode well for how the production is vetting these contestants. If there is anything to worry about indeed, it is the limits to which production will allow certain individuals to partake in shows like this. It is worrisome to know that there were two individuals, in back-to-back seasons, that had a past associated with restraining orders.
It is unclear how production would go about thoroughly vetting people, and, yes, sometimes checks take place before something happens, but something has gotta give. It is concerning for the future of the shows to keep bringing on people who are there for the drama but might actually not be safe individuals to have around.
As a fan, I'm concerned that in the pursuit of drama, we are overlooking the fact that these are real people's lives and, say what we want, they are putting themselves out there in a very vulnerable way. Is it fair to potentially follow the drama, even if you are bringing on people who are clearly problematic? While we can potentially form an understanding surrounding Gil's situation, Devin's orders took place some years ago so something had to come up on their checks, right?
I do think fans have to worry about what direction the franchise is going, especially if stricter protocols and limits are not placed on reviewing contestants' histories. I don't think the process will be perfect, and I don't think it will necessarily get "fixed", but I do think that there has to be a better way to fully vet an individual.
Some may say that people change and things happen, and yes, they do, and we should absolutely give individuals another chance. But is it safe and logical to do so on a public platform?
Looking ahead to The Bachelor Season 29, it is unclear how all of this will impact the next season. There have been a lot of rumors circulating that Grant Ellis is no longer the Bachelor, however, Reality Steve verified that the sources were not vetted, and there is no confirmation on that front.
But if these rumors end up being true, I think given the trend the series has been taking, it would not be shocking. I mean, does anyone willingly want to put themselves in the position that Jenn found herself in? Or potentially fall in love with someone who may not have a great track record (and perhaps they've changed) and may not have had the help to improve?
I think it is a tough line to balance and walk on and I know it is more nuanced than we like it to be, but I do think the tide is changing, and I believe that the flagship shows are starting to see a trend that is not appealing and has become increasingly more problematic. Something needs to change, a better process has to be implemented, otherwise, I'm not sure what we can expect from the next season of The Bachelor or even The Golden Bachelor shows.
We haven't heard much about Grant's season of The Bachelor since the announcement, and I'm not sure if that is a good thing, or if his announcement happened so early it feels like so much time has passed. As a fan, I'd say it will be very telling of if fans should worry depending on how Grant's season of The Bachelor is promoted.
So far, there hasn't been much so we will have to tune in, Bachelor Nation.
