How House of Villains became the worst competition show ever

With the finale of House of Villains season 2 behind us, there are already patterns developing that leave fans wanting more from the competition reality show. Here's what to change about the show, while keeping the big name reality stars we all know and love.

There are dozens of competition reality shows out there, but few combine cast members from all across the reality universe for all star lineups. That is what makes House of Villains unique, but only two seasons in, the show has continued to set fans up for disappointment. Let's take a look at what's wrong with House of Villains and if it can be salvaged.

Narrow casting opportunities

It's common for reality shows like to an even gender divide, which limits casting opportunities. After all, franchises like the Real Housewives are made up predominantly of strong, memorable women. In order to balance the scales, that means women who would make incredible cast mates from shows like The Challenge are missed.

Some networks also have exclusivity in their contracts for a few years. With Netflix creating a "reality universe", it's unlikely we will see another Love is Blind lead in the lair any time soon. Oh, to have another in-over-their-head villain like Shake Chatterjee on the show. A gal can dream.

Half hearted challenges

It's totally understandable these villains are not usually known for their athletic prowess. With the Housewives making up a decent amount of the past cast, it's just not their scene. The Challenge is really the only competition show requiring a balance of physical and mental training as well as endurance.

No one is expecting Teresa Giudice to run a marathon after skydiving into a cave, but it would be great to see something slightly more exciting than watching a group of middle aged reality stars hold on to a butter sculpture. This season, there was even't a final elimination challenge. It was just a redemption and then straight to the finale. What fun is that? You're telling me there wasn't a single octopus eyeball around to be consumed?

Lack of consistency

In House of Villains season 1, we had several guest appearances from villains past and present. Other than New York moving back into the mansion, the guests were barely a blip on the radar. We had Jax Taylor drop in for a two minute conversation in one of the first episodes of season 2, and then Bobby Lytes made a brief appearance to fill in for host Joel McHale.

I can't imagine Carol Baskin and Spencer Pratt were so booked they couldn't drop by LA for a day or so. Even more disappointing was not seeing any of last season's guests join the cast to compete. I love New York and hope if there are future seasons of the show she keeps coming back, but so many missed opportunities.

Popularity contests

Like any flawed voting system, in both seasons of House of Villains, we have seen the most liked, or least disliked villain win. Either there needs to be clearer instructions, these villains need to get with the program, or the show needs to be reformatted entirely.

In season 1, we saw The Challenge's Johnny Bananas practically hand the money over to Tanisha Thomas by choosing her to join him directly in the finals. His deception and reputation easily killed his chance at the supervillain title, because the villains didn't cast their votes based on who the actual biggest villain is.

Once again, House of Villains season 2 saw the same issue. Instead of choosing the clear winner for biggest villain, also from The Challenge, they chose the person they didn't hate as much. Wes Bergmann lost to Safaree simply because the others didn't like how he played the game. I'm sorry, but if you can't understand that being a villain means deception and mischief, what are you even doing?

If I had spent any money on this season, I'd want a refund. The show just isn't cutting it anymore. House of Villains has so much potential, but really, the producers are the biggest villains of all.
